Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh have also affected telecom service. Power cuts are happening in many areas of the affected area, due to which the operation of telecom towers is getting affected. Industry officials have said that in view of the current situation, the government has instructed telecom operators to enable intra-circle roaming. According to the news of Economic Times, this order has been given so that connectivity in the state is not interrupted.
Four operators got orders
According to the news, the government has asked all the four operators – BSNL, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea – to enable intra-circle roaming. Its advantage is that if the primary network of telecom users faces an outage, then users can take advantage of the service of other networks (telecom network in Himachal Pradesh) even while being in their home network.
No major damage to telecom infrastructure
Amid heavy rains, however, telecom operators in Himachal Pradesh say that despite the bad conditions, there has been no major damage to telecom infrastructure like towers or radios. An executive said that there has been some damage to the fiber laid on the national highway in that area, but network engineers are working to re-route that traffic.
No power supply is a big challenge
According to SP Kochhar, director general of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the biggest problem faced by telecom operators in Himachal Pradesh is the lack of grid power supply to mobile towers in many areas. He said that due to the problem of damaged or submerged roads/bridges, it is also a challenge to get backup power supply at the affected locations.
