Actually we are going to tell you about five important documents which must be with you while driving. We are telling this because if you are stopped by the police or have an accident, then suddenly many questions come to the fore, like- Do you have a driving license, RC of the vehicle? Have insurance? Have PUC certificate? In case of non-compliance, a heavy fine may have to be paid and even jail time may be served. That’s why keep these important documents with you while driving.
driving license
If you are driving then there are five important documents that you must have with you. First and foremost, is your driver’s license. Driving license is the only thing that proves that you are legally allowed to drive a vehicle. If you get stopped by the traffic police or meet with an accident, this will be the first thing you will be asked. As per the latest Motor Vehicles Act, if you do not have a driving license, you can be fined Rs 5,000.
For your information, let us tell you that various countries like Australia, United States of America, New Zealand, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, South Africa, Sweden, Germany, Bhutan, Canada and Malaysia accept Indian driving license, that means Indian driving license there too. Driving license will be valid.
Registration Certificate (RC)
Whenever the traffic police stops a vehicle, along with the driving license, the RC of the vehicle also asks for this registration certificate. In this certificate, information like the name of the owner of the vehicle, vehicle name, engine details, registration number, date, model number is written. If you are stopped and do not have your registration certificate, you can be fined Rs 10,000 or jailed for 6 months. If caught doing this again, you can be fined Rs 15,000 and/or jailed for 2 years.

It is mandatory to keep this document with you while driving the vehicle. During the checking, the insurance certificate of the vehicle can also be asked from you, and in case of failure to present it, the license can be revoked, as well as your challan up to Rs 2000 can be deducted or three months with community service. There can be a jail sentence.
PUC certificate
In view of increasing pollution, Indian government is giving more emphasis on PUC certificate. Every vehicle, whether it is two or four wheeler, must have a PUC certificate. It is mandatory to keep this document with you while driving. For BS3 or less engines, the driver must have a PUC certificate and it needs to be renewed every three months. If you have a BS IV or BS 6 operated vehicle, you will have to renew the certificate every year after the date of issue. If you are stopped and caught driving without a PUC certificate, you can face a jail term of up to 6 months or a fine of up to Rs 10,000 or both.
identity proof
It is not necessary, but still keep an identity proof with you. During police investigation, the officer may ask to use it to match the documents shown by you. In case of emergency, Aadhaar card, passport or any other document should be kept with you at all times.
You can keep all these documents in DigiLocker or M-Parivahan as it is valid across the country. According to the order issued by the Union Ministry of Transport and Highways, the government has now made this decision permanent.
