Tesla Electric Cars: After a long discussion, Tesla, the world’s largest electric car manufacturing company, has now agreed to manufacture its cars in India.
According to a news from Business Today, Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturer has submitted a preliminary proposal to the government to set up and sell its manufacturing units in India.
The company is considering building a gigafactory with the capacity to produce five lakh units of its vehicles in a year.
Tesla also aims to introduce a strong range of its electric vehicles in India on a large scale and a strong charging infrastructure for the same. Also, the company can introduce its electric car in India at an affordable price. However, no information has been given about it yet.
If Tesla succeeds in coming to India, then it can emerge as the third largest car manufacturing company in India after Maruti and Hyundai.
Government and Tesla officials will continue to discuss Tesla’s plans in India and local sourcing to find the right place for the Gigafactory.
Apart from this, the government may consider implementing the second phase of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme to help Tesla. The government is already in talks with the industry to go ahead with the FAME 3 scheme, as the FAME 2 scheme is set to expire in March 2024.
The conversation about Tesla in India first came to the fore in late 2021. When Tesla executives visited the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, they met Giridhar Aramane, the then secretary of the ministry, and after the meeting, Aramane took a test drive with Tesla executives.
In May 2023, Tesla executives held meetings with representatives of NITI Aayog, Ministry of Heavy Industry, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and other government offices.
