Upcoming MG Electric Car: MG Motors has recently launched a new small electric car Comet EV in the Indian market. Which is very much liked by the customers and it was the second best selling car of MG last month. Seeing more opportunities in this segment, MG Motor is preparing to give more options to the customers. A recently filed patent has revealed the design of a new small EV that looks similar to the Baojun Yep electric mini-SUV sold in the Chinese market.
Dimensions and Design
MG Motor has filed a new micro-EV design patent. Compared to the super-compact and MG Comet EVs, the new MG small EV has a more muscular profile. It has the shape of a conventional SUV, but has smaller dimensions. However, all the dimensions of Baojun Yep are more than Comet EV. Its length is 3,381 mm, width 1,685 mm and height 1,721 mm. Its wheelbase is 2,110 mm. MG’s new design patent is very similar to the Baojun Yep. This means that this new EV can be a rebadged version of Baojun Yep. It includes a boxy design, square front grille, square LED headlights, bumpy bumper and a flat bonnet with a sharp design. The side profile gets raised wheel arches, thick cladding, blacked-out A-pillars and functional roof rails.
Interior & Powertrain
The design of the Comet EV looks quite attractive, while the new Baojun Yep based EV might appeal to those who are looking for a car with great road presence. It will get a simple interior design with more space on the inside, dual large screens and some conventional control buttons below the central AC vent. Its range, specifications and performance can also be similar to Baojun Yep EV. In which rear axle electric motor is available with 28.1 kWh battery pack. It can generate maximum power of 67 bhp and peak torque of 140 Nm. It is claimed to have a range of 303 km. Its top speed is 100 kmph.
Can get ICE engine
It was recently revealed that a smaller ICE engine could be used for range-extending Baojun Yep. It can be offered optionally in both new and existing vehicles. This ICE engine could be a single-cylinder unit, which will generate around 13.5 bhp maximum power. This will increase the range of the car by around 80 km. Its fuel capacity can be 5 to 10 liters. MG’s new small EV can be launched in 2025.
who will compete
After the arrival of this car in India, it will compete with Tata Punch EV, which can be launched in 2024. It can get a range of more than 300 km.
