Road Safety Rules: New guidelines for signage on National Highways and Expressways have recently been issued by the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, Government of India. According to the official statement given by the ministry, these guidelines have been approved by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to further enhance road safety by implementing global norms to provide better visibility and guidance to drivers. Apart from this, recently the Ministry had conducted a review on the rules of signage regarding the codes and guidelines of the Indian Roads Congress. The new guidelines to be implemented are designed to provide better readability and visibility on the roads. It is ensured that essential information is easily visible even in inclement weather, by using large text, symbols and other elements to make it easier for the driver to understand. According to the ministry, different languages will also be included with the picture to better convey the important message. Due to which the needs of different groups of people traveling on the road, including less educated people, can be met.

The new guidelines lay special emphasis on promoting better lane discipline and decongesting traffic through better guidance and strategic positioning of drivers. These guidelines will be applicable phase wise on all upcoming National Highways, Expressways and Greenfield Corridors. Apart from this, National Highways experiencing traffic of more than 20,000 Passenger Car Units (PCU) will be given priority in applying new road signs. The objective of the ministry is to provide a safe journey for all the passengers traveling on these, which will help in making the roads accident free.
