MG Comet First Drive Review: The MG Comet is not your ordinary car and our first drive with this new EV saw how different it is apart from being a fun small city car. However, a real tasting happens when you spend some time with it. So, we spent 5 days with the MG Comet to see what it is like to drive it. First of all, its small dimensions attract the most attention. It looks very cool and there is something very different in it. Its styling stands out more than its dimensions. A closer look reveals its fine paint finish and premium quality. It looks quite premium and the same thing looks perfect for the interiors.
However, its grey/white look can easily get dirty. It has a very simple design which looks great. You can use it like a city car and it has enough space to keep laptop bag. The process of starting it is also very simple, which does not even have a start/stop button. Simply press the brake pedal twice and the car can be stopped easily. You can lock it by walking away. In our first drive review it is very beautiful to look at and very easy to drive despite its small dimensions.
Driving Experience and Features
The turning circle is less than 4.2 meters and that means it can turn in less space than other cars. You will hardly ever need to take a 3-point turn to park this car. The Comet is light and easy to drive but has a premium driving experience with linear power delivery. It is a light car and with 40 horse power it does not feel any shortage of power to drive.
I hardly ever use the car in any mode other than eco mode. If you only want to drive around with this car, Eco mode is best, Sport is not required. As experienced on our first drive, it needs to be handled carefully around big potholes or speed breakers because of the small 12-inch wheels. Despite its size, it seems that none of the other premium EVs in the market come with dual screens quite like this one. In such a small car, you get LED headlamps, a rear camera display, TPMS, 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car, digital key and many other features. No cost cutting has been done in this.
range and charging
In terms of range also you can get close to the official estimated range from it and it can easily be driven up to 160-180km. We got a range of 180km which is quite impressive. However, in terms of charging, we feel that the MG Comet needed to get faster charging. You can only charge it through a standard AC home charger, it does not support fast AC or DC charging. So it needs you to take care and charge it at your home only. Hence, it takes around 5-6 hours to charge up to 80 percent.
conclusion
The MG Comet is not meant to be a primary car or for long journeys. I took it on the highway and it did a comfortable 70-80 kmph but it is a great city car and has done a great job in that. It was very quick, easy to drive and felt premium during our time with it. It is a better option as a simple city car and for going from one place to another.
